ZuluTrade: how it works, where it helps and where it falls short

ZuluTrade is one of the oldest independent copying platforms: your account stays with your broker and the platform merely relays the trades. We look at how ZuluTrade works, the real cost of copying and what ZuluGuard does not do. Reader feedback is reflected in the section on weaknesses.

What ZuluTrade is and where your money sits

ZuluTrade is an independent trade copying platform: you connect your own trading account to it, pick lead traders and receive their trades on your account. The money stays with the broker, while the platform acts as an order relay and a layer of risk settings between you and the trader.

What to check before registering. The terms of copying combine the platform's rules with those of the connected broker: spread, swap and the turnover commission are paid to the broker, not to ZuluTrade. Compare the whole pairing rather than the platform alone.

How it works

Eight steps from registration to withdrawing profit. Money only comes in at step two; before that the showcase and filters can be explored for free.

STEP 01Registering on the platform

The account is opened with ZuluTrade itself, not with a broker. At this stage you are not trading anything and depositing nothing.

STEP 02Linking a trading account

You connect an account: an integrated brokerage account, MT4, MT5, ActTrader or X Open Hub. The money sits with the broker while the platform only relays orders.

the account stays yours
STEP 03Screening leaders

The showcase ranks traders by result, consistency and trading behaviour. There are more than forty filters, and that is how a shortlist gets built.

the real work
STEP 04Configuring the subscription

You set the copying size, the limits and the ZuluGuard parameters. The same leader produces different results under different settings.

this defines your risk
STEP 05A trial run

The first weeks at minimum size. What is being tested here is not the return but whether orders arrive and at what size they open.

STEP 06Measuring the divergence

Compare your entry price with the leader's across several trades. The difference in pips is your real cost of copying through an extra hop.

STEP 07Copying and monitoring

Trades run automatically while ZuluGuard watches the leader's behaviour and can end the subscription if they stray from their usual risk profile.

STEP 08Withdrawing profit

Money is withdrawn from the broker's account, not from the platform. The broker also sets the timeframes and methods — check them before your first deposit.

What is known about the company and its licence

The legal side is worth checking before you deposit: it changes less often than the tariffs, but it determines who you take a complaint to.

Strengths and weaknesses

Five arguments for and five against — from a subscriber's point of view, not a marketing page's.

+The account stays with your brokerThe platform does not hold your money: it connects to a trading account and relays orders to it
+You choose the brokerIntegrated accounts, MT4, MT5, ActTrader and X Open Hub are supported — you can stay with the broker you know
+ZuluGuardThe mechanism watches the leader's behaviour and ends the subscription if their trading style changes sharply
+A deep showcase and filtersMore than forty filters let you screen candidates by track record, drawdown and behaviour rather than by return alone
+A European regulator's licenceThe business is licensed by the Hellenic Capital Market Commission — no guarantee of results, but a verifiable legal status
−Two layers of intermediariesBetween you and the market sit both a platform and a broker: a failure or a dispute can arise on either side
−The showcase still sells returnsThe ranking spotlights performance and aggressive accounts float to the top — you have to set the filters yourself
−Latency and slippageThe order passes through an extra node, and entry price diverges from the lead trader's price more than it would when copying inside a broker
−The terms depend on the brokerSpread, swap and commission come from the connected account rather than the platform — compare the whole pairing
−ZuluGuard does not insure you against lossesIt reacts to a change in the leader's behaviour but will not stop you losing money on their ordinary strategy

What ZuluGuard is and what it does not do

This is the platform's own mechanism: it monitors the leader's trading behaviour and stops copying automatically if their style deviates from the norm — for example, a sudden jump in size or a change in the character of the trades. It covers one specific scenario out of six: “the leader changed strategy”.

what it protects againstA change in the leader's behaviourA sharp jump in size, a move away from their usual instruments, an uncharacteristic run — the subscription ends without you.
what it does not protect againstThe strategy's ordinary lossesIf the leader trades exactly as usual and simply loses money, the mechanism will not fire: nothing about their behaviour changed.
what to rememberExiting costs money tooEnding a subscription closes positions at the current price — during a drawdown that locks the loss in rather than cancelling it.
what to addYour own loss limitZuluGuard is no substitute for a safety catch on the account side: set your own drawdown threshold separately.

Who it suits and who it does not

who it suitsA good fit— you want to copy without moving money to a platform's account— you already trade at a broker with MT4 or MT5 and do not want to switch— you are prepared to set the filters yourself rather than take the top of the ranking— you want an automatic safety catch in case the leader changes style
who should skip itA bad fit— you want the lowest possible threshold and everything in one window — that is what broker services are for— you expect the ranking to pick a safe trader for you— execution speed is critical: the extra hop adds latency— you are not prepared to study the connected broker's terms separately

Frequently asked questions

Does ZuluTrade hold my money?

No. The funds sit in a trading account at the broker the platform is connected to. ZuluTrade gets access to relaying orders, not to withdrawing funds. That is the key difference from schemes where money is transferred to the organiser.

How much does copying cost?

The platform states there are no hidden commissions, but the final costs are made up of the connected broker's terms: spread, swap and turnover commission. The full cost has to be computed for the "platform plus broker" pairing over a year — as in our guide to fee models.

How does ZuluTrade differ from copying inside a broker?

Inside a broker, copying is faster and simpler, but the choice of strategies is limited to that broker's clients. An independent platform has a wider showcase and deeper filters, but the order passes through an extra node and the terms depend on the connected account.

Can the platform be explored without depositing?

Registering and browsing the leader showcase require no money. Funds are needed at the point of linking a real trading account — until then you can assess the depth of the ranking and the range of filters.

How does ZuluTrade work?

The platform connects to your account at a partner broker and broadcasts the trades of chosen traders onto it. The money stays with the broker, while ZuluTrade acts as a relay node and a showcase.

Is ZuluTrade reliable?

As a relay node it has operated for a long time and does not hold client money. The reliability of your deposit is determined by the broker your account is with and by its licence.

How much money do you need to start on ZuluTrade?

The threshold is set not by the platform but by the broker and the chosen trader: the minimum subscription amount is stated in their card. The practical limit is lower — the point at which the size is not rounded to the minimum lot.

What is the trader rating in ZuluTrade?

A composite score across several indicators, popularity among them. A candidate still has to be checked on track record, number of trades and drawdown rather than on position in the list.

How do you switch copying off in ZuluTrade?

From the client area, in the subscription settings. The rules for closing open positions are worth establishing before you subscribe: they determine whether someone else's trades are left with you.

Can money be withdrawn at any time?

Withdrawal goes through the broker under its rules, not through the platform. Switching copying off and withdrawing funds are two different operations, and the second takes longer.
