Forex copy trading, broken down to the numbers

Forex copy trading means another trader's deals are mirrored onto your own MT4 or MT5 account. We work out what volume to copy at your deposit size and how much the spread, swap and the lead trader's fee take away. Every claim comes with the arithmetic in lots and pips.

Copying forex trades: what changes when you connect it

Four things a forex trader should understand before their first subscription. None of them is obvious from the platforms' marketing.

TERMINALMT4 and MT5 stay yours

Copying attaches to your existing account: through the terminal's built-in signals, an expert-advisor copier or a broker service. You do not have to change platform or broker.

how to connect →
SIZEThe leader's 1.00 lot ≠ 1.00 lot for you

The size is scaled to your deposit. With a deposit twenty times smaller you get 0.05 lots — and if the proportion works out below 0.01, the platform rounds up and your risk ends up higher.

volume calculation →
COSTSYour broker sets the spread and swap

The leader trades on their terms and you on yours. The difference in spread and swap works against you on every trade, and the leader's advertised return does not include it.

the cost of costs →
RISKA stop in pips turns into money

The leader's 40-pip stop-loss at your size of 0.06 lots is $24. Count it in money and as a percentage of your deposit, not in pips.

One trade's journey: from the leader to your account

Enter your own numbers and walk through the stages. Each one shows exactly what happens to the size and what it costs you personally.

The full stage-by-stage breakdown, with formulas and the latency questions, is on the What happens when a trade is copied page.

Pip value and slippage are set with sliders; the defaults assume a standard lot on a major pair. The full version, including the losing-streak check, is in the settings breakdown.

Five steps to your first copied trade

The order followed by those who do not lose their deposit in the first month.

01Choosing a leader

You look for a candidate in the ranking and check track-record length, drawdown and trade count. Sorting the showcase by return is the worst filter of all.

1–2 hours
02Checking compatibility

You compare your deposit with the leader's. If the size has to be rounded up to the minimum lot, the strategy does not fit your account.

10 minutes
03Configuring the subscription

Copy mode, size ratio, loss limit, instrument filters. The same leader produces different results under different settings.

30 minutes
04A trial period

Two or three months at minimum size. The goal is not to earn but to see the real gap between your account and the showcase.

2–3 months
05Reviewing the portfolio

Once a month you compare drawdown with its historical range and switch off anyone who has gone beyond it. This is never passive.

The leader's showcase versus your account

The return on the card is calculated on the leader's account: without your fee, without your broker's spread and without entry latency. Move the sliders and the gap shows up immediately.

What most often goes wrong

Choosing by return

The top of the ranking is held by accounts running aggressive risk: an explosive percentage right up to the first losing streak.

How to screen →

Too much size

A deposit smaller than the leader's makes the risk per trade several times higher than acceptable. One losing streak and it is a stop-out.

Volume calculation →

Martingale beneath the curve

A smooth rising line with no drawdowns is a sign of averaging into losses. Years of profit, then zero in a week.

Underestimated fees

The success fee is charged on every profitable period, while the losses are yours in full.

Frequently asked questions

Is copy trading legal?

Copying trades is not prohibited as such: you trade on your own account and decide to subscribe yourself. The questions concern the platforms — the broker's status, its licence, tax reporting on income. What needs checking is not “copy trading in general” but the specific service.

How much money do you need to start?

The technical threshold at some platforms is $10, but it is meaningless: with too small a deposit the copied trade size gets rounded up to the minimum lot and the risk becomes unmanageable. The workable minimum is set by the leader's lot size, not by the platform's tariff.

Can you lose more than you put in?

On an unleveraged account, no. With leverage and no loss limit a negative balance is theoretically possible, although most brokers apply protection against it. The realistic loss scenario is not debt but a deposit reduced to zero.

Will the leader get access to my money?

No. They see anonymised subscription statistics and receive a fee under the platform's rules. They cannot operate your account or withdraw from it — that is what separates copying from a managed account.

How much can you earn from copy trading?

As much as the trader you chose earns, minus their fee and your own costs — and only if they earn anything at all. A showcase figure of 40 % a year, with a 25 % performance fee and 2 % in annual costs, becomes roughly 28 % on a subscriber's account, and in a losing year those costs are paid anyway.

Do you need to understand trading in order to copy?

You don't need to trade yourself, but you do need to do arithmetic. Without a grasp of drawdown, position size and costs, picking a lead trader comes down to picking the prettiest number on the showcase — the worst criterion available.

How quickly can copying be switched off?

On most services within seconds, from the client area or the app. The more important question is what happens to open positions: find out in advance whether they close with the subscription or stay on your account, because platforms handle this differently.

Is copy trading taxed?

Income from forex trading is income, and it must be declared under the rules of your country. The platform is normally not a withholding agent, which means calculating and paying is on you.

What should you do in the first month after connecting?

Change nothing and keep records: the actual trade volumes, your real entry price against the lead trader's, and the total costs. The first month is not for making money — it is for checking whether reality matched your calculation.

Can you copy on a demo account?

Many platforms allow it, and it is useful for learning the interface. But slippage and execution on demo are gentler than the real thing, so demo costs are systematically understated.
