eToro CopyTrader: copying a portfolio, not trades

eToro CopyTrader copies not individual entries but the trader's whole position, in proportion to your allocation. We look at how this differs from familiar forex copying, what it costs and why a forex trader feels cramped here.

What eToro CopyTrader is and how it is built

CopyTrader is a feature of the eToro social platform: you allocate an amount to a specific trader, and their trades are repeated on your account in proportion to the capital allocated. What is copied is not an entry signal but the state of a portfolio: if the trader holds 20 % of capital in one position, so will you.

Where the cost hides. Copying itself is free — the platform earns from spreads and instrument fees. For a forex trader that means comparing eToro with a brokerage account not by a "copying fee", which does not exist, but by the spread and swap on the specific pair.

Portfolio copying versus trade copying

This is the main difference between eToro and MQL5, ZuluTrade or broker services, and it is what most often breaks a forex trader's expectations.

Trade copying (MQL5, ZuluTrade)Portfolio copying (eToro)
What is transferredEach order separately, at its own sizeThe share of capital in each position
Entry timingYou enter alongside the leaderOn subscribing you may enter already-open positions
SizeLots recalculated for your depositA percentage of the allocated amount
DrawdownMeasured against your depositMeasured against the allocated amount

A practical consequence: on subscribing you inherit the trader's currently open positions if you enabled that option. In forex that means entering mid-move at a price that has already drifted from the lead trader's — an effect resembling slippage, but stretched over time and far more noticeable.

Legal entities and regulators

eToro operates through several licensed companies, and which one holds your account determines the instruments available to you and the protection you get.

Frequently asked questions

How eToro differs from ZuluTrade

ZuluTrade relays orders to your account at a partner broker, the account stays with the broker, and MT4 and MT5 work. eToro is the broker itself with its own platform, and what is copied is a share of capital rather than individual trades.

Does eToro suit traders who only trade currencies

Probably not. The platform's strength is a multi-asset portfolio. For pure forex, services that work inside MetaTrader are more convenient: familiar statistics and volume settings.

Is drawdown accounted for in portfolio copying

Drawdown is measured against the amount allocated to copying, not against the whole deposit. That is convenient for capping risk but makes comparison with lot-based forex statistics harder.

What to do if the trader stops trading

Copying stops along with their activity. Unsubscribing closes the copied positions at current prices — in forex that locks in the present result rather than cancelling the trades.

How does CopyTrader work in eToro?

What is copied is not an individual signal but the structure of a portfolio: each position's share on your account mirrors its share on the trader's. Subscribing therefore also means entering all of their already-open positions.

How much does copying cost in eToro?

There is no separate copying charge — the cost is built into the spread and the platform's additional fees. The absence of an explicit commission does not mean the absence of costs.

What is the minimum needed to copy on eToro?

The per-trader threshold is shown in the platform's interface and is noticeably higher than the minimum size of a single position. Check current amounts on the site: they change.

Is eToro suitable for forex?

Currency pairs are there, but the platform has always aimed wider — at stocks, ETFs and crypto. There are fewer traders dealing only in currencies than at specialist venues.

What happens when you stop copying on eToro?

Copied positions close at current prices and the result is booked to your account. Switching off during a drawdown means locking in the loss.

How does eToro differ from classic forex copying?

By copying a portfolio instead of copying trades, and by running in its own environment instead of MetaTrader. Hence a different set of risks: you inherit a position structure, not an order flow.
